Berat – The City of a Thousand Windows

Perched on the banks of the Osum River, with whitewashed houses stacked like an amphitheatre beneath its ancient fortress, Berat is a city where history breathes through every cobblestone.

Once a key stronghold in the Illyrian, Byzantine, and Ottoman worlds, today it’s a UNESCO World Heritage treasure that has somehow managed to keep its soul intact.

As you wander through Mangalem’s steep, winding streets, the scent of fresh bread drifts from small bakeries, mingling with the distant call to prayer from centuries-old mosques. Across the river in Gorica, the pace slows — wooden balconies draped in flowers overlook the water, and children ride bicycles past time-worn stone houses.

And then there’s the view from the castle. Climb at sunset and you’ll see the river turn to gold, the surrounding mountains bathed in pink light, and the city glowing as if lit from within.
